Into the Hothouse, 2023
Photographs, paracord, bioplastic, miniature clothespins, botanical specimens, grow lights, filtered light. One view of a 2000 square foot immersive installation with 10foot ceiling. Solo exhibition at Gillespie Gallery at Mason Exhibitions in Fairfax, VA.
For the first time, I included two of my artist books within this installation. 'Unfurl Unfold' was suspended from the ceiling, with its pages exploding into space. This visceral book reflects on gardens and libraries as conveyors of time.
My photograph-based collages examine how plant life—whether immaculately tended or untamed growth—is woven into all aspects of life. Gatefolds expand the book’s dimensions, while the turning of pages reveals inclusions featuring plant-inspired poetry and visual clues to horticulture-related books referenced throughout. Imagery includes cut-up and woven photographs of plant matter, still lifes of books from my personal library, and documentation of my immersive installations.
